Recording for October's AMA Editor Meeting

Topic: Time Management

I had one submitted question and one participant asking additional questions for October’s Ask Me Anything Editor Meeting on Time Management.

This is the recording of that meeting. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions by clicking on “leave a comment” below.

Currently the ask me anything meetings are available to all my subscribers. In 2025, they will only be available to paying members.

Additional Time Management Info

I thought I would share my daily schedule here.

  • Head into office and create my daily to-do list

  • Complete 2 editing tasks (from 2 different projects)

  • Do 1–3 nonbillable tasks

  • Complete an editing task

  • Do 1 nonbillable task and/or one more editing task

  • 1:00 Pick up my youngest from daycare, make and eat lunch

    • if time, do a quick nonbillable task while daughter pets cats in my office

  • 1:30 Put my youngest down for her nap

  • (back in office around 2) Complete an editing task

  • Do 1–3 nonbillable tasks

  • Work on editing task(s) until 3:15

  • 3:15: Engage on social media (spend anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how much work I have left to do)

  • 3:30: Set up after-school snacks and tablets for kids

  • 4–5: Remaining nonbillable tasks while kids have tablet or time with friends

As mentioned in the meeting, if I need to, I will go back into my office after 8 pm and do either editing or nonbillable tasks that had to get done that day and didn’t

  • Since I schedule in additional days that I may not need to work on a given project, I can often just plan on using that time to finish my list instead of going in after 8 pm. So it is rare that I need to these days. I needed to more often when I didn’t schedule that additional buffer time and in summer when kids weren’t in school.

Because I run an agency, create newsletters, give presentations and webinars, write blogs, and engage on social media daily, I have more nonbillable tasks than the average editor.

I do get some compensation from those nonbillable tasks (such as my cut on work done by my team members) and webinar and product purchases.
